Resort Fees and the FTC

The FTC recently published a report addressing the issue of resort fees charged by hotels. An excerpt from the report reads, “This analysis finds that separating mandatory resort fees from posted room rates without first disclosing the total price is likely to harm consumers by increasing the search costs and cognitive costs of finding and choosing hotel accommodations.”

This isn’t the first time the FTC has addressed this issue. In 2012, and then again in 2015, the agency sent letters to hotels, warning them to disclose resort fees. Now the White House’s National Economic Council has expressed concerns over resort fees. These organizations believe failing to disclose resort fees threatens the competitive process.
