The New Restaurant Industry

Technology is evolving rapidly and affecting more and more industries each day—and restaurants are no exception. A recent article for Fast Casual discusses the advice of Robert Grimes, president and CEO of the International Food & Beverage Technology Association, who suggests that restaurants should be considering when and how to implement the following technologies:

  • Robotics – Robots in restaurants can greet guests and offer menu information, as well as work in the kitchen.
  • 3D Printers – Have you ever considered printing your food? This technology is rapidly becoming a realistic pursuit for foodservice operators.
  • Blockchain – This tech as applied to the food industry offers increased efficiency and transparency.

Grimes further offers strategic advice for incorporating new technology into the food service industry. His “’seven Cs’ of foodservice technology”—areas to consider as you look to pursue technology in the restaurant industry—are:

  1. Clarity – Be sure that everyone is on the same page, as far as what type of technology you’re pursuing.
  2. Convergence – All systems and data should integrate.
  3. Connections – Think social media—how can technology help you stay in touch with your customers.
  4. Convenience – The technology you use should be easily accessible to your customers.
  5. Choice – As far as technology goes, you have a lot of options.
  6. Consumer – How can you use the technology that your customers already have?
  7. Commitment – From the top to the bottom, everyone in your organization needs to be committed to incorporating and fully utilizing any new technology.
