Exciting Developments in Restaurant Technology
As we head into 2020, there are a variety of notable technology trends emerging in the restaurant industry. Forbes recently collaborated with a number of organizations to compile a 2019 Restaurant Tech EcoSystem map. The following are the big technology themes that the map highlights:
Back-of-House Technology – In previous years, the focus of restaurant technology was primarily on front-of-house solutions. This year saw the focus shift to solutions for the non-guest-facing side of things.
Mobile Solutions – At this point, mobile solutions for ordering, paying, and communicating are common. 2019 saw an increase in new technologies, such as pre-ordering and location-based marketing. There was also a resurgence of QR codes.
Competition Over Customer Loyalty – With the advent of third-party ordering and delivery services, many restaurants have developed their own online direct ordering systems. The competition between these third-party systems and restaurants’ own systems was a major theme in 2019.
